REDISPERSIBLE POLYMER POWDER

Cement-based mortar has been used for centuries to bond mineral-based building materials and to design surfaces. These traditional mortars mainly consist of sand and a binder. On the building site, they are then mixed with water. In cement-based mortar, cement is the binder. One contact with water, the cement sets and hardens. It forms crystals that interlock with the sand, giving the mortar cohesive strength. At the same time, the cement crystals provide adhesion, binding to the substrate. They imbed themselves into the open-pored surface of the substrate (or building material). After setting, there is a durable, though brittle, bonding layer. Under impact, the crystals break. Cracks appear in the mortar, since the brittle matrix can’t absorb the impact properly. For this reason, mortars have been modified with polymer since the 1950s. Beside sand and cement, another binder is added: dispersible polymer powder.

EAZEECEL™ RDP series is copolymer of vinylacetate and ethylene. It is a free-flowing powder, readily dispersible in water and has good saponification resistance.
